Tejano Music Fanfare
In San Antonio
|
Elfida and I went down to San Antonio, TX, on April 4th, 5th, and 6th for the Tejano Music Fanfare at the Mercado. It was great! We got there kind of late on Friday and most of the groups signing autographs had already left. The music was still going strong though. My cousin, Carlos, and his wife were supposed to meet us there, but they wussed out at the last minute. CARLOS, YOU BIG WUSSIE! There, now I feel better. |

Rojelio met us at the La Quinta where Elfida had done her negotiating and had gotten us rooms for $49.00 a night. This was on the weekend! She's good!!!
This group was pretty good and had a different gimmick. They were the Enmascarados! They wore masks!!! Not a big deal if you are a wrestler or a bank robber, but different when you are a Tejano group. |

Check out the killer accordion player! He made it sound like he it was wailing! I was waiting for "The Rock" to show up and start body slammin' people. The picture on the far left is of Joey Y Tejano Gunz out of Austin, TX. He worked the crowd good. Had everyone whooping, and hollering with some Tejano yells to "Y volver, volver". |

Joey is from Elfida's home area, Pecos. He was the singer for David Lee Garza until he formed his own group. You can view some of his old pictures at http://www.tejanoproud.com/2001/joey_despos.htm The group on the left, well I forgot their name, was good and its singer was very good looking. She put on a great show. |

I snapped this picture from the far end of the street. They sounded great, but the crowd was now shoulder-to-shoulder and it was too hard to walk through it to get close. I don't know who they were. The whole place was packed with people. There were a few rowdy drunks, but most were just having a good time. It was fun just standing there and watching people just break-out dancing or seeing them start singing along with the bands. We managed to find parking, for $5.00, about two blocks from the Market Square. The area is well lit and San Antonio PD kept the rowdies in line. |
